Authenticity+ Discernment + Fun = Social Media Success
Authenticity:
Be real. Be who you are in all of your communications.
Don’t make up stuff about yourself, your past successes, how much money you will make and how much money your readers will make if they buy your products.
Discernment:
BEFORE you mention personal likes and dislikes, hobbies and struggles, consider what it will do to your brand.
I love spirituality, painting mandalas, travel, baking, holidays and more.
When I started blogging years ago, my mind would go blank because I was trying to squeeze out interesting things to write about. (Not fun).
But when I started to mention personal things, people started responding.
One of my favorite examples is when I sent out an email to hundreds of people with a picture of me wearing a cheese hat!
The Green Bay Packers were in the super bowl, and I’m from Green Bay! I couldn’t help myself. I bet I might have even turned off some Viking, Bears, Browns and Steelers fans – oh well.
I don’t write about personal stuff all the time of course. But I mix it in pretty often!
I’m OK with attracting customers and clients who are OK with that. Notice though, I don’t discuss my views on religion, politics and politically charged issues. Why? Because I don’t want my words to be misinterpreted and my blog is a forum that’s meant to inspire and motivate people to have fun while marketing.
I know people who think I’m too open about my hobbies that aren’t “work related” won’t take me seriously. That’s OK with me. But it took me a long time to realize that!
Fun:
By being authentic, and being discerning, you’ll start to have FUN while you’re blogging, communicating on Facebook and tweeting your peeps!
You won’t struggle as much to come up with topics to write about. You’ll intuitively know how to mix your personal life into your business life – after all – it’s one life!
If you don’t begin to have fun (once you get over the overwhelm of how to start), then I’m sorry to say, I think you’re in the wrong business.
Which gets back to my topic of the month – Do What you Love and the Money Will Follow. (I know some people hate this saying – and I’m OK with that!)
If you love what you do for a living, you’re determined, disciplined, willing to work hard and learn new ways of doing business – you’re bound to make money. ( and no, I can’t tell you HOW much money you’ll make!)
That’s all for now! I have a presentation to get ready for tomorrow!
